That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that we have been beta testing CAT Collision Mitigation Cameras on several of our loaders in Colorado. This innovative technology represents a significant step forward in our commitment to protecting our team members, equipment, and worksites.
Addressing a Persistent Challenge
After thoroughly evaluating incident data regarding heavy equipment operations, the findings revealed a recurring issue: heavy equipment occasionally backs into stationary objects, other equipment, and has the potential to back into workers on foot. Determined to raise the bar industry-wide and find a solution, our Safety department explored various options to mitigate these risks on our jobsites.
The Smart Solution: CAT Collision Mitigation Cameras
After careful consideration, they discovered that CAT offers a smart camera system that integrates seamlessly with the pre-existing systems on our equipment. This technology stood out as the most economical and effective solution for our needs. Here’s why:
- Advanced Hazard Detection: The CAT smart camera system is designed to identify equipment, objects, and, most importantly, people. When a hazard is detected, the system provides an alert inside the cab, ensuring the operator is immediately aware of the potential danger.
- Visual Aid for Operators: In addition to the in-cab alert, the system displays a visual box around the hazard on a separate screen, like an iPad. This feature provides operators with a clear, immediate understanding of the situation, enhancing their ability to respond quickly and effectively.
- External Alarms for Added Safety: One of the standout features of this system is the external alarm that activates when a hazard is detected while the equipment is backing up. This alarm serves as an audible warning to anyone in the equipment’s path, adding an extra layer of protection for those on the ground.
